Social Security

When can I apply? Where can I apply?

  1. After registering with SEVIS, you will need to wait 2 – 3 business days before applying for a social security card. Once you have received your receipt from SEVIS, you may apply.
  2. You must give your U.S. address when you apply for a social security card.
  3. Once the application process is done, you will receive a receipt saying that you have applied for a social security card.
  4. Take the receipt and show it to your employer. Your employer can then pay you.
  5. If you have worked before you have received the receipt, your employer will pay you for those days you worked without a social security card. This may be done by adding the full amount to the next pay check or by dividing the amount over several pay checks.
  6. No pictures may be taken inside the social security administration building.
